Last week we talked about some benefits to having a Pre Workout Meal. This week I want to share with you some benefits of a Workout Shake, timing, how to build it, and how important is it actually to have one.

First, what are the main benefits of having a Workout Shake? Well it's a shake because during exercise or right after, it's hard for your body to digest and break down solid food forms. Therefore a shake will be easier for your stomach to handle. Also, because hours will go by from your Pre Workout Meal and Post Workout Meal (next weeks newsletter) this will help fill that void in your schedule. This shake is meant to help replace what you are losing and for starting the recovering and rebuilding process from training.

Secondly, let's start with the timing of the Workout Shake. Assuming that you have your Pre Workout Meal in order, you shouldn't start drinking this shake as early as the start of your workout. You can also drink this right after your workout as well. My general rule of thumb is this, if your workout is brief (30-60 minutes max) and it's not very grueling, you'll probably be fine with consuming this post workout. But if your workout is longer than 60 minutes, and/or its a grueling workout, you should probably be sipping on this drink throughout the training session.

Third, let's talk about what we can use to build this shake.

  1. Water: We need water to stay and remain hydrated throughout the training sessions.
  2. Protein: The best form of protein for a Workout Shake is Whey Protein. It helps keep protein in your blood stream while you train. It can help speed up your recovery and reduce performance decreases during a workout.
  3. Carbs: Carbs are good for restoring energy levels, keeping your intensity up, and helps speed up the recovery process. You can use carbs from blended up fruit, fruit juices, or simple sugars like Gatorade or dextrose powder.
  4. Salt: Salt is good for maintaining your electrolyte balance and helps your muscles firing rates. Basically it helps the performance of your muscles and helps with balancing out your water intake too. You lose salt when you sweat and work, so it's not a bad idea to include some sodium in this shake.

Now, if you're not already utilizing a Workout Shake, or yours doesn't look quite as thorough as this list above, don't freak out and think that you're ruining all of your progress. Workout Shakes only help optimize your overall training and nutrition efforts. This is a small piece of this holistic puzzle, but I want you to have this information because it can be helpful to make a little extra progress if you feel like you're ready to add this into your plan!

There are lots of benefits to working out. First of all, you can have a better body once you do it. Also, working out is the best thing to do if you have nothing to do. You are not making money, but you are making up for the stress that your body has endured. A fit body will be able to last all through out the lands, or at least that is the idea behind what we are trying to do.
